How to Choose Your First Tarot Deck

Rider-Waite tarot cards laid out on a table

Walk into our Divination section and you’ll find well over a hundred tarot and oracle decks, from classic designs to vampire fae and saints. If you’re buying your first deck, that many choices can stop you in your tracks. The good news is that there’s no wrong answer, only a deck that fits you better or worse. Here’s how to find yours.

Start with the Rider-Waite-Smith System

Most modern tarot decks follow the structure created by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrator Pamela Colman Smith in 1909. The deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana cards for life’s big themes and 56 Minor Arcana cards split into four suits of Cups, Pentacles, Swords and Wands.

What makes this system so friendly for beginners is that every Minor Arcana card shows a full illustrated scene, not just a number of symbols. When you draw the Three of Swords, you see three swords piercing a heart in the rain, and the meaning almost explains itself. Nearly every beginner’s book teaches this system, so a Rider-Waite-Smith-style deck lets you learn from any guide you pick up.

Let the Art Speak to You

Tarot is a visual language, and you’ll spend a lot of time looking at these cards. Choose art you genuinely enjoy and that makes you curious. Ask yourself:

  • Do the images pull me in and make me want to tell a story about them?
  • Can I tell what is happening in each scene?
  • Do the colors and style feel calming, energizing or mysterious in a way I like?
  • Would I be happy to lay these cards out on my table every day?

If a deck doesn’t move you, it will sit in a drawer. If you love it, you’ll reach for it and learn faster.

Consider a Tarot Kit

A tarot kit bundles a deck with a full-size guidebook, which is often far more detailed than the small booklet tucked into a standard deck box. For many new readers, a kit is the easiest way to start, because the card meanings, spreads and practice exercises are all in one place.

Tarot or Oracle Cards?

Oracle decks look similar but follow no set structure. Each deck has its own number of cards and its own themes, from affirmations to animal guides. They’re wonderful for daily inspiration and work beautifully alongside tarot, but if your goal is to learn tarot itself, start with a 78-card tarot deck and add an oracle deck later.

The Myth About Being Gifted Your First Deck

You may have heard that your first tarot deck has to be given to you as a gift. It’s a lovely tradition, but it’s not a rule. Plenty of experienced readers bought their own first deck, and choosing one that truly speaks to you is a good way to start your practice with intention.

Caring for Your New Deck

  • Get to know it. Go through every card one at a time before your first reading and notice what stands out to you.
  • Cleanse it. Many readers pass a new deck through incense smoke or leave it near a piece of selenite or clear quartz.
  • Protect it. A cloth bag or a wooden tarot box keeps the cards clean and gives them a home on your altar.
  • Practice daily. Pull one card each morning and see how its meaning shows up in your day. It’s the fastest way to learn.
