Chime Candle Magic: A Beginner's Guide to Candle Colors

By The Magick Cauldron · November 2, 2026

Lit chime candles in assorted colors for candle magic

If you’re new to candle magic, chime candles are the perfect place to start. They’re small, about four inches tall, burn in roughly an hour or two, and cost very little, so you can work a simple spell in one sitting without leaving a flame unattended overnight. That’s what makes them such a popular choice for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

What Is a Chime Candle?

Chime candles, sometimes called mini tapers or spell candles, are the same size as the slim candles used to power spinning angel chime ornaments, which is where many people believe the name comes from. Today, practitioners use them for short, focused workings: a single intention, a single color and a single burn. Because they burn completely in one session, you see the whole working through from lighting to the last flicker, which many people find more satisfying than snuffing a large candle and relighting it over several days.

How to Work a Simple Chime Candle Spell

  1. Choose your color. Pick the color that matches your intention using the guide below.
  2. Cleanse the candle. Pass it through incense smoke, or wipe it with a cloth to clear any energy it picked up on the shelf.
  3. Dress the candle. Rub a small amount of an oil that matches your goal onto the candle. To draw something toward you, rub from the ends toward the middle; to send something away, rub from the middle out toward the ends. You can roll the oiled candle in a pinch of crushed herbs for extra focus.
  4. Charge it. Hold the candle in both hands and picture your goal as if it has already happened. See it, feel it and make it real in your mind.
  5. Light it and let it burn. Set the candle in a chime candle holder on a heat-safe surface, light it and let it burn all the way down. Stay with it the whole time.

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep flames away from curtains, paper and pets.

Chime Candle Color Meanings

Color correspondences vary a little from one tradition to another, so treat this as a starting point and trust what feels right for your own practice.

  • White: purification, protection, peace and an all-purpose substitute for any other color
  • Black: banishing, absorbing negativity, breaking bad habits and protection
  • Red: passion, courage, strength and physical energy
  • Pink: self-love, friendship, romance and emotional healing
  • Orange: creativity, success, encouragement and attraction
  • Yellow: communication, study, confidence and mental clarity
  • Green: money, prosperity, luck, fertility and growth
  • Blue: peace, calm, truth, wisdom and spiritual healing
  • Purple: psychic ability, spiritual power, intuition and ambition
  • Brown: grounding, stability, home and animal magic
  • Gold: wealth, success, victory and solar energy
  • Silver: intuition, dreams, reflection and lunar energy

Tips for Better Results

  • Work with the moon. Many practitioners time spells that draw things in to the waxing moon and spells that release or banish to the waning moon.
  • Keep it simple. One candle, one clear goal. Writing your intention on a slip of paper and placing it under the holder helps you stay focused.
  • Watch the flame and the wax. Some people read the way the candle burns, such as a tall, steady flame or wax that pools in a certain direction, as a sign of how the working is going.
  • Dispose of the remains respectfully. Bury leftover wax, return it to running water where that’s allowed, or simply throw it away with intention.
