Celebrating Yule: Winter Solstice Traditions and Altar Ideas

White candles in an evergreen wreath for a Yule winter solstice altar

Yule falls on the winter solstice, the longest night and shortest day of the year. In 2026 the solstice arrives on December 21. For many pagans and witches it’s one of the most joyful sabbats on the Wheel of the Year: from this night forward, the days grow longer and the sun begins its slow return.

The Meaning of Yule

Yule is a celebration of light in the darkness. Ancient peoples across Northern Europe kept vigil through the long night, lit fires to encourage the sun’s return and gathered with family and community to feast. Many familiar holiday customs, such as evergreen trees, wreaths, mistletoe and the Yule log, grew from these winter celebrations.

Spiritually, Yule is a time for rest, reflection and hope. It invites you to look back on the year that is ending, release what no longer serves you and plant the seeds of intention for the light half of the year ahead.

Yule Colors and Symbols

  • Colors: red, green, gold, white and silver
  • Plants: evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, mistletoe and pine cones
  • Symbols: the sun wheel, candles, the Yule log, stars and bells
  • Scents: pine, cinnamon, clove, orange, frankincense and myrrh

Setting Up a Yule Altar

Your Yule altar doesn’t need to be elaborate. Start with a cloth in red, green or gold, then add:

  • Candles in gold, red and white to welcome back the light. A single large pillar candle can stand for the reborn sun.
  • Evergreens such as a small pine bough or a sprig of holly, symbols of life that endures through winter.
  • A small cauldron to hold a candle, burn a written intention or simply represent the dark womb from which the sun is reborn.
  • Incense or resin such as frankincense or pine to fill the space with the scent of the season.
  • A bell to ring in the returning light at sunrise.
  • Symbols of the sun such as an orange, a gold coin or a sun wheel.

Simple Ways to Celebrate

Keep a Solstice Vigil

Light a candle at sunset on the solstice and keep it burning safely through the evening, or stay up to greet the sunrise. Many practitioners spend the night in quiet reflection, journaling about the year that is ending.

Burn a Yule Log

Traditionally, a large log was burned in the hearth to bring warmth and luck into the new year. If you don’t have a fireplace, decorate a small log with evergreens and set three candles into it to burn on your altar.

Write and Release

Write down what you want to leave behind in the old year, then safely burn the paper in your cauldron. On a second slip, write what you want to welcome as the light returns and keep it on your altar until spring.

Share a Feast

Yule has always been about community. Share a meal with friends or family, give small handmade gifts and leave food out for the birds and wildlife who are weathering the winter, too.
